Tip 9 - QPSMR Companion - Replacing a character in all entry name
Recently, our bureau department undertook a small project to provide SPSS SAV files, which we created from a supplied QPSMR QDF and data file.
However, when the QDF was set up by the customer, many of the entries were given names which included a minus sign (-) and these all needed renaming, so that SPSS did not alter the entry names completely.
Rather than using right-click [Rename] and altering individual entry names, this is what we did to quickly replace each of the minus signs with the letter x, meaning that the entry names would still be recognisable in the final SAV file.
|As the QDF file had been
used for data entry the [Frozen (data files exist
switch)] was set on, so in
QPSMR Companion at the Main window we used the [Ctrl]+[A] keys to select all of the entries, followed by the scissor toolbar icon to cut them.
|Immediately we used the Paste special toolbar icon and at the "Paste special" dialog box we selected [Block…] and at the "Block replace" dialog box we typed - in the [Search for] box and x in the [Replace with box] then clicked [OK] followed by [Paste entries].|
|The "problem" entries were then all renamed (the minus signs replaced with x) and the QDF was ready to be used for the export.|
|For more entry renaming options, using the QPSMR Companion [Regular Expression search and replace] facility, see Ian's Favourite Feature - Regular Expression|
